The Freak of Beauty zine is based on the episode “Punk” from a mini-series podcast called Articles of Interest. My goal with the zine was to mimic punk fashion and create bold, typography-focused spreads. The tone words for this project were contrasting, rebellious, textured, and edgy.
I hand-sewed the sleeve for the zine out of black denim, and used real studs and safety pins to mimic the DIY sensibility of punk fashion. I combined layered type, fabric textures, concrete textures, and textured paper to create a visual and sensory experience. The typography is based on the blocky newspaper type and typewriter fonts often found in punk zines and punk rock band posters.
